CaliLiv – Neoseiulus californicus: Versatile Predator for Mite Management

CaliLiv – Neoseiulus californicus: Versatile Predator for Mite Management

CaliLiv (Neoseiulus californicus) is a highly adaptable predatory mite used to control a wide range of mite species in greenhouse crops. As a Type II predator, CaliLiv (N. californicus) develops fastest when feeding on two-spotted spider mites but can survive on pollen or alternative prey when spider mites are scarce, providing ongoing crop protection even under low pest pressure.

Target Pests:

CaliLiv (N. californicus) effectively manages multiple mite species, including:

  • Two-spotted spider mite

  • Carmine spider mite

  • Broad mites

  • Cyclamen mites

  • Citrus red mite

  • Fruit spider mite

  • Begonia mite

  • Russet mites

Lifecycle of Neoseiulus californicus

CaliLiv (N. californicus) progresses through several stages, all contributing to pest suppression:

  • Egg Stage: Eggs are laid on leaf hairs and hatch in 1–2 days.

  • Larval Stage: Non-feeding; lasts about 1 day.

  • Protonymph & Deutonymph: Last 3–4 days each; mites begin feeding actively.

  • Adult Stage: Adults begin reproducing within 1 day of emergence. Females lay approximately 2 eggs per day, with a female-to-male ratio of 2:1.

  • Generation Time: Under optimal conditions, the full lifecycle completes in 7–10 days, enabling rapid establishment in crops.

Key Benefits:

Benefit

How It Helps Growers

Broad pest control

Effective against multiple mite species.

Survival without prey

Can persist on pollen, maintaining population even when spider mites are scarce.

Rapid establishment

Reproduces quickly under favorable conditions, providing timely protection.

Application Guidelines, Storage & Handling:

  • Gently roll the bottle to mix mites without shaking, then sprinkle evenly over plants.

  • Adjust release rates based on crop type, infestation level, and predator-to-prey ratio.

  • Use immediately for best results. Short-term storage is possible for 1–2 days in a cool, dry place (10–15 °C), away from sunlight, wind, and extreme temperatures.

  • High humidity and warm temperatures (24–27 °C with >60% RH) support successful establishment and multiple generations.

Recommended Release Rates:

Release Rate

Repeat Every

Preventative

25–50 mites/m²

14–21 days

Curative

200–250 mites/m²
